Langkawi trip Day 2: Black Sand Beach Langkawi

After taking shower and get some rest back in hotel, we headed out for some round the island activity!!! 1st stop we went to the famous black sand beach or Pantai Pasir Hitam, located at Jalan Teluk Yu on the north side of the island.

According to the local folklore (information replicated from information board):

The black sand at this beach was the outcome of an ancient civil war between the Land Kingdom and the Underwater Kingdom. The was started when a mermaid princess from the Underwater Kingdom fell in love and ran away with the prince of the Land Kingdom. The war was basically a one-sided affair, since the Underwater Kingdom had more troops than the Land Kingdom. However, the Land Kingdom had a wise man who gave brilliant advise to help secure their victory. The wise man instructed the people of the Land Kingdom to collect firewood and stack it up along the seashore. Before dawn, all the firewood was burned and the flames could be seen miles away. When the troops of the Underwater Kingdom saw it, they thought it was the flames of the torches of thousands soldiers. Hence, they fled away. When the wood had completely burnt down, it left burnt marks which can still be evident today. Nevertheless, the black sand is not as black as charcoal, if you dig a few centimeter deeper, you will see the common beach sand.

Upon arrival, we can see there is some stalls selling T-shirt and souvenir at the market before you could reach the beach, which we stop by and start the shopping spree : )))) The T-shirt is irresistible to me, and I bought one of those.

Passes by the market, we walk down a long stairs and there is the black sand beach in front of us. A big disappointment as there is not much black sand can be found, maybe taken back by tourist?? The beach is narrow, not suitable for beach side activity like sunbathing. However it is a nice spot to stop by and enjoy the view : ) You may also enjoy the coconut selling at the stall while relaxing there.
Coconut is cooling and good to take during such a hot day, and the flesh is so yummy!
